Building community in a classroom and beyond is an important part of working with students. Children need to grow in recognizing and valuing similarities and differences. It is a growth process. A great tool to help with ideas and suggestions is the magazine Teaching Tolerance. There are great resources available on-line as well.
Just to get started you might use this link http://www.tolerance.org/activity/looking-closely-ourselves to view a lesson plan for helping students look more closely at themselves. It is in great detail and lists all the materials and the step by step process to follow. This is the first in a series to be presented during the current school year. The overall goal for the lessons can be found at the following http://www.tolerance.org/activity/different-colors-beauty.
As a Catholic school teacher, we are called to create community among us.
